Spring Basics

Spring is finally here! I don't know about you, but I always anxiously await the beginning of spring. The telltale signs are the emergence of the spring crocus and daffodil bulbs, as well as the return of birds singing their happy songs. Not only does nature go through such big transitions but so does our wardrobe. Time to think towards warm weather by shedding the fabrics that kept us cozy over the long winter. We here at PatternReview have curated a list of 7 basic wardrobe essentials to add to your 2024 Spring wardrobe.

1. The Spring Dress

When I was a little girl I would judge my brand new spring dress by how well it "twirled".  So when I would spin, I'd take into account the way it would flare out in a circle. The bigger the flare the more I loved the dress (and if it was pink, I was sold).  Well, that was a long time ago, and my criteria of the perfect spring dress has definitely changed. Now we look for fit, comfort and style (and a pink dress still makes me happy).

Just a couple of the many Spring Dress patterns that PatternReview has in stock:

Named Clothing - Kielo Dress and Jumpsuit

Going through our members reviews, we had many singing the praises of the Named Clothing Kielo Dress for Spring. Plus, it has the option of a jumpsuit in one pattern! The Kielo dress and jumpsuit are wonderfully casual, yet stylish pieces of clothing. You can sew both variations either with or without sleeves. The dress has a neck band, and a vent at the back hem to add room for movement. The armholes of a sleeveless dress are finished with a bias binding. There is a vent with a button closure at the back of the jumpsuit, and its neckline is finished with a facing.

I have an old Kwik Sew pattern that is very much like those spring dresses. I might add a tier if there's enough fabric. Those Style Arc pants are tempting! I'd really like it if someone came out with a handbag that zips up. Having commuted on public transit, that zip-up main compartment is a big deal for me.

Check out Emmaline bags, hers have zippers, and she has wonderful instructions and online tutorials.

Great article. You've nailed this wardrobe! There are some excellent patterns picked out. I was glad to see that PR is now varying Style Arc patterns. I've heard a lot about them, and wanted to try one of their pants patterns for a long time.

My new TNT is the Style Falcon Straight A's Skirt. Designed for stable knits, I found that in softer knits, it drapes nicely and the gores make it swing when I walk. It definitely has that twirl factor you mentioned.
