We are almost to the finish line of the Sewing Bee and I am already having withdrawals! What will my days and weekends look like when I am not drafting rules, posting blog announcements, judging the entries and chatting with the contest committee? Does anyone else feel the Bee withdrawals? Coming back to this round though. We challenged our 21 participants to create a garment which meets the "Cargo bottom" criteria. What does that mean? Utiliity pockets and a waist closure. No knit fabrics were allowed. And because we didn't limit this round to pants, we were even more excited to see what we will get to see. As you can see, our members brought their A - GAME!
Whether or not cargo bottoms are your style, I hope you will take the time to learn about all these participants' inspiration and how they each came up with the final entry for this round. All the garments are so well made with intricate details. Almost nobody followed the pattern as is and it was fantastic to see how they made it so true to their own design aesthetic. I did score this round, which by the way has been the hardest round to judge this year. In the end I, felt that I would be happy to see anyone win this round. They are all winners IMO.
I knew the other judges were feeling this too so I asked them. Here's what they had to say.
Everyone had great interpretations of the challenge, as usual. Adding a drawstring closure to the hem of my gardening cargo pants will be in my future.
- AnneM (Contest Committee, Sewing Bee Judge)
This was the most difficult round I have ever scored. All the entries were so very good. Our Bees are amazingly talented.
-Sandra B (Contest Committee, Sewing Bee Judge)
I’ll never look at cargo bottoms the same way again! From doggie treats, metronome, construction tools to city maps and the necessary lipstick, who knew in the hands of the right person, there is a pocket made especially for these things. I love how the participants made sure their cargo bottoms fit in with their lifestyle.
- MVi14 (Contest Committee, Sewing Bee Judge)
I wondered if our theme might be too narrow but I am thrilled to see the creativity and skills exhibited by the 21 participants! Each entry perfectly met the maker’s needs.
- Bonnie O (Contest Committee, Sewing Bee Judge)
I totally expected creativity and sewing finesse, but the 21 participants in this round blew my expectations out of the water! I have so many notes for a future pair of cargo’s for myself!
-Connie Bontje (Contest Committee, Sewing Bee Judge)
As much as we would like everyone to win, this is a contest after all, and a challenging one at that.
We scored your entries based on the following criteria:
1. Adherence to the rules.
2. Fit
3. Sewing Quality
4. Presentation ( Review and Photos)
5. Creativity
6. Overall impression
We scored independently first and then combined our scores to come up with the winner and the 11 participants who will be moving to the next round. The scores were really close this time! And now it is time to meet the winner of this round.
THE WINNER
CupidDog for her Rally Obedience Fitted Cargo Pants.
P.S. Love that you included the soundtrack for your make! Proclaimers "Sunshine on Leith", Red Hot Chili Peppers "Stadium Arcadium", "Classic Queen", Bastille "Wild World" & "All This Bad Blood".
I have to admit I was a bit daunted by the "cargo bottoms" challenge. I am not a fan of khaki. So, there was no chance that khaki would be my choice. I thought, maybe a skirt, but pockets on a skirt are unappealing. Skort - hard no, so not me. Which left pants, my old nemsis. But wait, last year, I made this really fun pair of brocade pants, and I love those. So a jumping off place. Now how do I make this wearable for me? What would Raffey do?
I've recently taken up dog sports (Rally Obedience), well actually the dog has, but I need to drive him there. Most of the time I'm in jeans and a t-shirt and a vest. But if I were to actually compete, I'd like to look like me. So, good pants that can hold poop bags, a phone and treats. This is my challenge. Pants that I will wear.
