Sweater Knits

The Pullover Sweater is essential to everyone's wardrobe no matter what type of climate you reside in. We may think of a sweater being thick and chunky to keep us warm and cozy during those long winters, especially here in the Northeast.  But sweaters are also worn in the warmer climates in lighter and thinner knits to protect our skin from the damaging rays of the sun. Sweater knits have to be one of the most versatile fabrics out there. So, when it comes to sweater knits there are SEW many options in fabric and styles to make.

At PatternReview we are well aware of what is trending among our reviewers.  Our members love to make sweaters of in all shapes and forms. We are here to introduce you to many new and older sweater patterns from all over our shop from various designers.  Let's take a look at the most popular sweater patterns available on PatternReview.

Sew House Seven - Toaster Sweaters

The Toaster Sweaters, the name says it all.  This pullover sweater, designed by Sew House Seven, has 85 reviews to date and has won Best Pattern of 2017.  The Toaster Sweaters consist of two different high neck top designs to keep you toasty warm and stylish in the cooler months. They are both very simple to sew and perfect for sewists of all levels who want to try their hand at sewing knits. These sweaters are designed to be constructed using knit fabric with at least 20% stretch around the width of the body.

Sweater #1: Is a closer fitting, semi-cropped sweatshirt/sweater. It works best when sewn in thick, stiff knits with some body to keep the neck standing upright. It features raglan sleeves, a wide waistband, a loose turtleneck, long cuffs and falls between the high and low hip. It’s great in a standard sweatshirt fleece (with stretch) however, it’s also extremely handsome in a sweater knit to dress it up a bit.

Sweater #2: Is an easy top/sweater that can be dressed up or down. It is somewhat fitted through the shoulders and sleeves and then swings out a bit at the underarms and hem. It features a semi-high-neck that takes its inspiration from funnel and boat necks. It also has mitered side vents with a hi-low hem that is 1” shorter in the front than the back. The front hem falls just below the high hip. Sew it in a boiled wool knit, a wool jersey or ponte for a more dressed up look. Sew it in a sweatshirt fleece (with stretch) or jersey knit for a more casual look.

Sew House Seven - Tabor V-Neck

Sew House Seven returns to our list with it's second most popular sweater knit pattern.  The Tabor V-Neck is a simple yet versatile style that is as dressed up or casual as you’d like to make it. It is a loose fitting, drop shoulder tee or sweater that is built for comfort while looking smart. With many different options for sleeves, necklines and body lengths, you can make a Tabor V-neck for every season. Due to its wide, oversized body width, the Tabor V-Neck T-shirts are most flattering when sewn in a light-weight, fluid knit fabric with at least 25% stretch such as rayon, bamboo or soy knits while the sweaters are best with sweater knits that also have at least 25% stretch however, do not have a high lycra content (6% or above) or have too much stretch recovery. This is to allow the wide neckband to perform at its finest without puckering or gathering.

Hey June - Sheridan Sweater

And finally, Hey June brings us a cozy, stylish, yet simple sweater, the Sheridan Sweater.  The Sheridan has two views with several options. View A has a crew neck, and view B features a built-up bateau neckline, similar to a wide mock turtleneck. Both views have the option for a regular banded length, cropped banded length, or cropped hem length.  Sleeve styles include a cuffed bishop sleeve or an elasticated bishop sleeve, or a simple wide bell sleeve.

The Sheridan Sweater is the perfect fall and winter layering piece to keep you cozy and warm but looking put together and stylish. It works best in soft knits with some drape and good recovery. Any type of French terry is a great option provided it has some spandex (Lycra) for required stretch. Most double knits, interlocks, ribbings, and heavier jersey will work as well, provided they are not too thick and have at least 60% stretch on the cross grain. Sweater knits are ideal for the Sheridan as long as they have a sturdier hand. Look for more tightly knit sweater knits or ones that include spandex (Lycra).  It is easy to dress up or down depending on fabric choice, styling, and accessories, making it perfect for weekends, the office, or going out. Because it is so easy to sew, fit, and wear, the Sheridan also makes a great gift.

Such interesting sleeves and necklines. I especially am interested in the gathered sleeves. The soft cowl necks are always a hit for me. I also have trouble finding really nice sweater fabric.....it is always so thin and not really what I think it should be.Maybe a post for fabrics.

Not sure whether this is appropriate to ask here, but where are people getting their sweater knits from? This has been a very disappointing pursuit for me in the past...

You know it's been a long winter when you look at this collection and say, " I could use a few new sweaters...when you should be saying maybe I'll sew a spring dress!"
