The Wrap Dress

I could not be more excited to present our PatternReview members with the following curated list of wrap dress patterns. When it comes to dresses any stylist will tell you that the wrap dress is a must for your wardrobe. I would compare a wrap dress to a fitted robe, where the front is "wrapped" one side across the other and cinching in place with a tied belt. The fabric which is overlapped and closed down the body to your preferred length, but is opened around the neckline in a V-shape.  One may be surprised to discover that the wrap garment "originated in China and can be traced back to the Shang dynasty (1600 to 1046 B.C) before spreading to other countries (such as Korea and Japan)." (Wikipedia)

There has been a huge buzz in the sewing community as 2024 marks the 50th Anniversary of the release of the iconic pattern design of the Wrap Dress by Diane von Fürstenberg. As it is known, trends seem to circulate and come around full circle. "The Fürstenberg interpretation of the wrap dress, which was consistently knee-length, in a clinging jersey, with long sleeves, was so popular and so distinctive that the style has generally become associated with her. The wrap dress that she designed in 1974 was a design re-interpretation of the Kimono." (Wikipedia)  Since the 70's this style has been replicated and re-worked and worn worldwide.

At PatternReview we are well aware of what is trending among our reviewers.  Our members love to make wrap dresses in all shapes and sizes. We are here to introduce you to many new and old wrap dress patterns from all over our shop from various designers.  Let's take a look at the most popular wrap dress patterns available in the PatternReview shop.

Don't overlook Butterick 6703!! I've made it FIVE times and love every one. I modify the pattern to overlap the bodice fronts, overlap the skirt fronts and THEN pin & sew the waistline seam to secure all the layers permanently in place. I adore jersey wrap-style dresses and I've sewn lots of them from various patterns and found this one to be the best by far.

I like a high neckline... has anyone published a pattern for a Claire McArdell like dress that wraps above, not below, the bust?

My daughter is pregnant and loves wrap dresses. Has anyone adjusted a wrap dress to make a nursing wrap dress?

I usually shy away from wrap dresses, but two that I love are By Hand London's Orsola dress with its back wrap (no chance of excess cleavage!) and How To Do Fashion's No. 12 Aalborg (so sophisticated). I need to get that Aalborg review written!

I would love to try a wrap dress again but every one I've had has been a disaster! A generous bust (36 F or G) means that I invariably show more than I should- studs and pins are not really an option either and I don't want to have to wear a cami underneath either. Which pattern could you recommend?

Have you tried the Cashmerette Appleton? It has cup sizes for E/F and G/H

I was a little surprised not to see the Cashmerette Roseclair wrap dress on this list. And another way to go is the Zadie wrap jumpsuit from Paper Theory. There are more options for wrap dresses on this link, although some overlap with this very good blog post. https://thefoldline.com/2022/05/28/top-10-indie-summer-wrap-dress-sewing-patterns/

Thank you for posting this. I've been wanting to sew a wrap dress since I have nothing in this style. I rarely wear a dress but I want one! Lol. This post will help me decide which pattern to order. :)
