Button-up Shirts

There is nothing more classic than a Button-up Shirt. When creating this Wardrobe Essential blog post, I had trouble with what to call this type of woven shirt with buttons. "dress shirt, button shirt, button-front, button-front shirt, or button-up shirt is a garment with a collar and a full-length opening at the front, which is fastened using buttons or shirt studs. A button-down or button-down shirt is a dress shirt with a button-down collar – a collar having the ends fastened to the shirt with buttons." (Wikipedia)  We settled on Button-up Shirt, though personally I start from the top and button down. Casual to formal, a button-up shirt has a few main components that make them stand out from a regular shirt. The first being the obvious, buttons fastened in the front, collars and cuffs. Everything else is based on your own discretion.

At PatternReview we are well aware of what is trending among our reviewers.  Our members love to make button-up shirts, in all shapes and sizes. We are here to introduce you to many new and older shirt patterns from all over our shop from various designers.  Let's take a look at the most popular button-up shirt patterns available in the PatternReview shop.

Grainline Studio - Archer Shirt

Our first classic button-up shirt is a long time community favorite on PatternReview.  This button-up shirt, designed by Grainline Studio, has 162 reviews to date and has won Best Pattern of 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2013.  The Archer Button Up is a loosely fitted button up shirt with slightly dropped shoulders and long sleeves. View A has a traditional box pleat at the back yoke and angled cuffs while View B has a gathered lower back detail and straight cuffs. Techniques involved include sewing a straight seam, setting sleeves, creating continuous button plackets, adding a shirt collar and inserting buttons & buttonholes.

Having started out with the big four patterns, moved onto KwikSew and now indie patterns, I have made quite a few button up shirts over the years. I would add to this: Closet Core have just added a button up shirt and shirt dress pattern to their line up, the Jenna, surprisingly they didn't have a classic shirt pattern until now, and they have done a class to go with the new pattern. The Modern Sewing Co. has several classic shirt patterns, including a unisex shirt. The Assembly Line has the beautiful classic Oversized Shirt pattern, which defines the trend.

I enjoyed this article so much. It's so helpful to see "hall of fame" patterns so beautifully modeled on real people we know and interact with. I can better visualize what will work with my own fitting challenges and gives me confidence to step out and give it a try.

I have made Simplicity 8753 (Men's shirt) a lot of times, for me and family members (more than 10 times). I don't see it here. I also use their wonderful instructions (Burrito method, especially) in other button-up shirts of other makers (like Kwik-Sew) for my children.
