The winners of the Bags and Wallets Contest have been selected.  Handbags and Wallets are a staples in our lives. This contest offered members to sew a carryall that is a fashion statement or a functional workhorse.  We had bag contests in the past, but for this one we asked our members to, make a handbag / purse / pocketbook or wallet. Any style is allowed: handled, cross-body, shoulder, clutch, messenger bag, backpack, trifold wallet, etc. Wallets or purses using frames are eligible. Closures (e.g. zippers, purse hardware. buttons, clasp frames, etc) are optional. What was not included in this contest: luggage and wheeled bags. The handbag had to be "carry-on" size or smaller.  See more Contest Rules here.

34 members participated in this contest.  All our members of PatternReview had the opportunity to vote to decide the First Place Winner. The Second Place winner was a random draw by PatternReview. And the winners are....

First Prize Winner:  Annette Wright with Lavender and Twine, Alaula Handbag

Annette Wright fell for the Lavender and Twine Alaula Handbag when she saw it made up on her Facebook feed.  What did she have to say about construction, "As far as construction goes, this was not the easiest project, I'm still learning. I do have an industrial sewing machine which probably helps, but not as much as I wish. It's easy enough when you first start, but once you add in all the layers, it gets harder and stitching a nice seam isn't the easiest."  See her review here.

Second Prize Winner (Random)Sewingshaybug with her Swoon Patterns Denver Backpack

Sewingshaybug made her Swoon Denver Backpack, combining African print fabric and cork. When asked, by Evensews, if cork difficult to work with? "Go for it !!! The cork was not hard to work with. Looking forward to see your bag!"  See Sewingshaybug's review here

Congratulations to all that entered the Bags and Wallets Contest.  Check out all our participants Bags and Wallets in the Photo Gallery, for some inspiration.  If you would like to follow the participant chat on the message board, check it out here.

I had no idea that the level of talent in bag sewing would be "sew" high in this contest. I watched the bar go up daily as bags were entered. Congratulations to Annette, Sewingshaybug, and to all participants. You all made this contest so exciting.

Thanks to everyone who voted for my bag, I'm truly humbled. I also just read what I wrote about the construction (above in this post) and I truly didn't mean to sound so negative. I'll try to focus on the positive more in the future. Thanks again to you all. And I did use my bag today when out for lunch with the ladies.

Having just spent $+++ for a handbag I can't help feeling envious of Annette's ability to produce this absolutely professional looking handbag. Looking at all the entries I was impressed at the level of skill needed to produce so many note worthy bags - I would not have wanted to be a judge although I have to say Annette's did stand out as a "WOW" entry in every way!!
