I am constantly disappointed with the offerings from the big pattern companies. Much better to support smaller companies who actually care about what they produce! Downloadable independent patterns beat the big companies hands down.

I carry a yardage conversion chart with me. Many conversion chart styles can be found on the internet. Most of the charts list 32", 35"-36, 39", 41", 44"-45", 50", 52"-54" and 58"-60" The one I have lists material yardages of 1 7/8 yd to 5 1/4 yd.

I only have a very few vintage patterns, but the two I most recently purchased are a nearly exact match to the Vogue 1934 and the Buttericks 6931! As I look through these I am astonished at how similar they are to the sewing I did when I was first sewing in high school in the 70s. I wish I had kept those patterns! The duster…now THAT is a breath of fresh air! Very pretty lines and details.

Hmmmmmm. I've been sewing with knits lately which are definitely wider. Where do you all find 60" wide wovens? Thanks for the heads up about the requirements on the patterns.

Many linens are 60" wide and some home Dec wovens...

This alarming discussion has led me to decide that instead of purchasing any new patterns, I am going to go through my huge stash of ones that I already own (some probably dating to the 1970's) and make them work!

😁 I just picked up 1974's simplicity 6710 & 1973's 5850 & they are nearly an exact match to the angel wing blouse & v-seam duster above. Long live vintage!

I loved sitting at the fabric stores pouring through the pattern books. I have so many patterns never used yet!! And probably duplicates from the days when there were great sales. But if I couldn't see how much fabric was required for a pattern, most likely wouldn't buy the pattern. With quality fabrics costing what they do today, I certainly wouldn't want to spend an extra $20 or more 'just in case' I didn't have enough fabric because it wasn't specified on the pattern package.

If they are not giving the yardage needed, it's going to hurt their sales. I know I have looked at the yardage requirements before buying a pattern - like sometimes at the fabric store where I have found a bolt of fabric with what just might be enough for a project I have in mind. And there are still 44"/45" fabrics out there - though some at Joann's are 42"/43. Could it be that at laying out the pattern on 44"/45" fabric leaves so much scrap that someone sewing it would consider piecing it instead of laying out the pattern pieces as they are? But yes, with knits it would make sense if a lot more of them are 60".

I have not noticed this, but I haven't purchased a new Butterick or Simplicity pattern recently. I will need to check this out next time that I am pattern shopping. If the patterns that you are referring to are recommended for KNITS then I could understand why they are limiting the fabric widths.

I'm noticing a disturbing trend on the new Butterick and Simplicity patterns. They are not giving yardages for 44"/45" fabric widths in the yardage chart on the back envelope. I didn't look at all of them, but the patterns I looked at only included yardages for 60" fabrics. I was going to see if I had enough 45" fabric for one of the new patterns, to determine whether I should buy the pattern. Simplicity just lost my sale ( at least for right now).

I noticed the that 45" requirements disappeared when they started getting more "inclusive" with sizing. They claim to be "inclusive", yet still draft everything with a B cup only, something I wouldn't be at a size 6 or 26 and I know I'm not alone. I think I've purchased only a few Vogue and Butterick patterns of anything released in the last 2 years. The quality of information and design has just gone too far downhill to make me want to buy them, and I love buying patterns.

I have noticed it too but with pattern sizes getting more inclusive of larger measurements and dresses needing more room for the larger sizes, I simply chalked it up to they needed more room for the pattern itself.
