Bohemian Style

The Bohemian fashion or Boho Chic style has made a huge resurgence in the fashion world.  "The Bohemian Style focuses on color, life, and culture as its main aspects, seeking to replicate the Romani nomadic lifestyle. The word Bohemian comes from the French word "bohémien," meaning Romani. The Bohemian clothing style seeks to reflect the unconventional or 'bohemian' lifestyle, evolving over the years." (wikipedia)  Our fashion cues are taken from what's popular among the youth.  The Bohemian or hippie style came out of the 60's and 70's during the famous concert festival, Woodstock.  Now with the comeback of the music festivals, (ie Coachella and Bonnaroo) you can see this culture in mainstream fashion.  Bohemian fashion refers to the artistic, free spirited, and eclectic lifestyle. Long flowing or tiered skirts and loose fitting dresses, peasant blouses, and wide legged pants are all part of this fashion. There are SEW many bohemian style options available, as well as fabric choices, bringing endless possibilities.

At PatternReview we are well aware of what is trending among our reviewers.  Our members love to make Bohemian style clothing in all shapes and forms. We are here to introduce you to twelve new and old bohemian dress, blouse and skirt patterns found in our online shop from various designers.  Let's take a look at the most popular patterns available on PatternReview (in no particular order).

Dress and Blouse Patterns

True Bias - Roscoe Blouse & Dress

The first pattern, giving us both dress and blouse options, we would like to introduce to you is the Roscoe Blouse and Dress from True Bias.  This is an older pattern that has ridden the wave of this trend as it comes in and out. The Roscoe Blouse and Dress is a boho-inspired garment with a gathered neckline and raglan sleeves. The neckline is finished with a center slit and neckties. The sleeves are designed to hit a few inches above the wrist. View A is a blouse, view B is a mini dress or tunic and view C hits mid-calf. Views B and C have a large ruffle at the bottom.

Sew House Seven - Romey Gathered Dress & Top

The next pattern is from another one of our indie companies that gives us a slightly different shapes to the Roscue. The Romey Gathered Dress & Top pattern has been crafted by Sew House Seven and was inspired by their beloved Remy Raglan pattern. The Romey has an elegant empire waist with a gathered skirt or peplum and billowy gathered sleeves at bracelet length. Both dress versions include patch pockets because our customers love pockets. With its flowy and oversized fit, we would classify the Romey Gathered Dress and Top as "secret pajamas" that can be worn casually with sneakers, sandals or boots. Sew one up in a slinkier fabric for a more polished look!

Anyone interested in bohemian style needs to check out Thea Porter designs. She introduced caftans as style wear in the 60s and 70s (Liz Taylor was a BIG fan!) and was most famous for her "Gypsy" dress. She was a contemporary of Zandra Rhodes. He daughter wrote a biographical book about her, and there is another book with LOADS of fabulous pictures, such an inspiration!

Kennis Wong's book Sew Beautiful also has a lovely boho peasant style blouse pattern called "Palermo". I've made 3 already this summer! Her pattern line "Itch-to-Stitch" is my favorite.

Would never think to describe my style as "Boho" but have made two of these patterns myself and am obsessed with many of the others (Romney gathered top, both members' versions of the Cashmerette Roseclair dress (both are gorgeous) and the Freedom dress). Maybe I am a little boho after all.

I love that you feature both older and newer patterns. It's easy for some real gems to get lost in the continual landslide of new patterns.

Copy editing needed. Spellcheck at the very least. It's "resurgence," and "This is an older pattern that has RIDDEN the wave." Sorry, but you need to take a little bit of care.

I can't really comment on the clothes, I've spent 2 days down the Romani rabbit hole! I hadn't realized how little I knew. Just fascinating. Thank-you so much for the link. I am certainly learning something!
