The winners of the 2023 Outerwear Contest have been selected. For this contest "outerwear" is defined as being something worn over other clothing to protect one from the elements, or to provide a utilitarian function. Coats- raincoats, ski parkas, slickers, jean jackets and ponchos were all eligible. Ski pants, rain pants were also okay. Capes and vests were allowed, as long as the vest was not a fashion vest. Suit jackets did NOT fit in this contest as well as accessories. For the purpose of this contest, beach coverups, cardigans and sweaters were not considered to be outerwear. First Prize Winner: ChicagoCalCal in her Merino wool ITS Winterthur Jacket
ChicagoCalCal goals this year was to make some outerwear, along with use fabric in her stash, utilize a recently acquired heavy-duty snap and grommet press, and upcycle a nylon poncho. Well, she achieved these all, making the a Utility coat from the Itch to Stitch Winterthur Jacket. What are the advantages of sewing your jacket with wool fabric? "The Super 120 Merino jacket doesn't show wrinkles or dirt and can be cleaned easily with a gentle wash. The loose fit allows me to wear several layers underneath. Second Prize Winner: AshwiniJ in BuraStyle Magazine Cotton Jacket
Just as ChicagoCalCal, AshwiniJ's winning jacket was based on fabric she found 5+ years ago at Elegant Fabrics in NYC. What did AshwiniJ say about finding the right pattern for her printed corduroy fabric? “Given how much trouble I had finding a pattern for a looser-fitting denim jacket with full lining, this pattern is a bit of a unicorn. Definitely worth it if you're looking for such a garment." See her review here.
