The Jumpsuit

The Jumpsuit, a one piece coverall that includes a top and connective pants is a functional garment with an utilitarian history. It was first developed in 1919 for the purpose of being literally a jumpsuit for parachutists to jump from planes. By the 1930s, fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, began designing jumpsuits for women to wear as a novelty item. And it wasn't until the 1960s and 70s that the jumpsuit became a fashion staple and became a unisex item or an alternative to the ballgown worn by the likes of Elvis and Cher.  So, when it comes to jumpsuits one can make them in any style, shape and size.

At PatternReview we are well aware of what is trending among our reviewers. We are going to take a look at the three utility wear garments otherwise known as, the jumpsuits, flightsuit/boilersuits and overalls/dungarees. Our members love to make jumpsuits of all shapes and forms. We are here to introduce you to many new and older jumpsuit patterns from all over our shop from various designersLet's take a look at the most popular jumpsuit patterns available on PatternReview and reviewed by you, our members.

Overalls or Dungarees

Sew House Seven - Burnside Bibs

The Sew House Seven Burnside Bibs are the most reviewed overalls on this list with 41 reviews to date. The Burnside Bibs are not your traditional work overalls. Yes they are comfortable and easy to wear, yet they are much more stylish and feminine than traditional versions. The straps that transition to narrower ties offer many options for how they can be tied. And, like so many sewing patterns, we as sewists are able to influence how casual or dressed up they become simply by fabric choice. Choose a fabric with some drape such as Tencel and pair them with a silk blouse and some heels for a dressed up look. Use a more traditional denim or linen and wear them with a tee shirt, sneakers or clogs and take a more casual approach.

Closet Core - Jenny Overalls

And finally, Closet Core is back with our members most reviewed dungaree pattern. Inspired by vintage work-wear, Jenny is a modern interpretation of classic overalls and wide leg trousers with an ultra-high rise, sleek, functional details and a comfortable all-day-long fit. Make a more sophisticated version of dungarees with our well-proportioned bib and optional utility pocket, or omit the bib entirely and make a pair of wide-legged cropped pants, full-length pants or shorts. Optional details abound; mix and match the curved slash front pockets, faux fly front, single or double zipper waistband and rounded back patch pockets. To personalize even further, go all out with high contrast topstitching, or take a more minimalist approach for a clean, elegant finish.
